Build Your List. Simple. Easy.

Yep. Everyone tells you it’s simple and easy to build a list. So let’s find out if it’s true.

There are many ways you can build a list.

    1. you can buy a list (but how do you know those people have agreed to be ‘sold’, in other words you better make sure they optin to you or you could find yourself in breach of spam laws).
    2. you can do a deal with someone else and cross promote each other to each other’s list (so how do you do that if you don’t have one? hmmmm)
    3. you can agree to do a co-registration thing where when people sign up to one person’s list they end up on other people’s list as well (now I know how my inbox has been swelling)
    4. you can put a product into oneRead More »Build Your List. Simple. Easy.

    Hundreds of Blog Topic Ideas

      blog-ideas

Blogging is brilliant fun. It’s useful and informative and fills a creative void for many bloggers. But there are times when the well runs dry. Or maybe you’re just staring out and just wondering what you could possibly write about.

In preparation for my editorial calendar this year I searched online for what people have suggested as blog topics. Many are very specific; some a quite general; all stimulate ideas on topics for my blogs and with a little lateral thinking there is no reason why you couldn’t find 12 blog posts – one for each month of the year. Or 52 blog posts – one for each week. Or even 365 blog posts – one a day!

Here are 10 posts to titillate your brain’s creative juices. Don’t sit down and read each one. Follow my 5 minute plan:

      1. Go to a few listed sites
      2. Scan the ideas
      3. Pick the ones that jump out atRead More »Hundreds of Blog Topic Ideas

        Blogging Software and ASP.NET

There are a range of platforms around today. ASP.NET is a web application framework developed and marketed by Microsoft to allow programmers to build dynamic web sites, web applications and web services. Lots of people want to take advantage of this platform and some consider its blogging software is the most advanced. In many ways, this particular program is more adaptable and more versatile than any other blogging software on the market. As a result there has been a slow but steady proliferation of ASP.NET based blogging products such as ThinkJot and BlogEngine.

BlogEngine for example has taken off as an open source project and has developed quite a groundswell within the ASP space.

Although most of the people who favor the program are accomplished coders who are familiar with programming languages like html and C++, this ASP.NET program from Microsoft is much easier to use than a lot of other blogRead More »Blogging Software and ASP.NET

Would You Rather Pay $67 or $599?

When you want to develop your writing skills, there are a lot of options around, and I mean a LOT.

Not too long ago I did an 8 week course in creative writing. It was interesting enough but I don’t believe my skills improved much. I certainly didn’t produce anything – the course was a series of writing exercises. I definitely didn’t sell anything. I did pay $350 for the course.

At a Writers Festival I went to in August, many published writers were disparaging of the academic degrees advertised for Writing. Their experience told them that one learns by writing, and reading other writers. Those degrees cost around $15000 a year.

I just noticed this promo by a major magazine and online player. WRITERS DIGESTTheir 10 week course is $600.

I’ve been promoting a hands-on, practical program that runs for a full 12 months and covers planning, writing, marketing and publishing – the wholeRead More »Would You Rather Pay $67 or $599?

            Getting Your Domain Name

Setting up an online business can be done a number of ways.

You don’t need to have your own hosting and website. I’d argue it’s better if you do, just not necessary if you can’t manage the funds for hosting (which is not more than a cup of coffee a month!).

For those who can’t manage that, or who have a different model of business based on a bunch of squidoo lenses for example, there are lots of free places to start your web career.

              • Wix
              • Weebly
              • WordPress
              • Blogger
              • Tumblr
              • etc

What you do need though, imho, is your own domain name. Why? Firstly, you have some sense of control. If your host locks you down for any reason, you can redirect your domain to another server for example. Secondly, by choosing a good EMD (exact match domain name), you improve your SEO.

So make sure you have a clear plan on what your business will look like. That will dictateRead More »Getting Your Domain Name
