What\u2019s really weird is that the User Guide is usually provided in soft copy on your machine. That means you need to start your machine to learn how to start your machine!<\/p>\n<p>In any case if you need to restore your machine back to factory default settings, the best solution is usually contained within the User Guide supplied with your laptop. <strong>Hot Tip<\/strong> \u2013 print it out!!<\/p>\n<h2><font size=\"6\">Repair<\/font><\/h2>\n<p>For the Toshiba Satellite L640 series, here\u2019s how to REPAIR your system if you need to:<\/p>\n<p>1. WARNING \u2013 <strong>back up ANY data<\/strong> you don\u2019t want to lose to an external drive or disc or usb device (there\u2019s really no point in backing up to your existing drive!) <\/p>\n<p>2. turn <strong>off<\/strong> the laptop<\/p>\n<p>3. hold<!--more--> down the <strong>F8<\/strong> key and, <u>while holding<\/u>, turn <strong>on<\/strong> the laptop<\/p>\n<p>4. the <strong>Advanced Boot Options<\/strong> will display \u2013 choose <em>Repair Your Computer <\/em>by using the arrows and hit \u2018enter\u2019<\/p>\n<p>5. follow the instructions<\/p>\n<h2><font size=\"6\">Restore<\/font><\/h2>\n<p>CRITICAL \u2013 the recovery utility is stored on a hidden partition on your drive. If you make a mistake you may lose it! So, ALWAYS create a recovery DVD or USB drive. That way, if the system restore fails you can fall back to the DVD or USB version. Go to \u2018All Programs\u2019 and choose Recovery Media Creator \u2013 follow the steps.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to do a <font size=\"3\"><strong>full system restore <\/strong><\/font>then you have two options:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong> &#8211; using the <strong>partition recovery method<\/strong> then :<\/p>\n<p>1. Turn sound ON <\/p>\n<p>2. Turn off computer<\/p>\n<p>3. Hold down \u201c0\u201d (zero) key and while holding, turn the computer ON<\/p>\n<p>4. A menu will pop up &#8211; follow the instructions<\/p>\n<p>OR\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong> \u2013 using the <strong>Recovery DVD\/USB<\/strong> that you created (you did that, right?)<\/p>\n<p>1. Turn sound ON<\/p>\n<p>2. Plug in the USB or DVD Recovery media and turn off the computer<\/p>\n<p>3. Hold down the F12 key and while holding it, turn the computer ON<\/p>\n<p>4. When the <em>Toshiba Leading Innovation <\/em>screen comes on, release the F12 key<\/p>\n<p>5. Scroll through the options and choose the one that relates to your recovery media<\/p>\n<p>6.
